Philosophy.

The Mount Zero Olive grove has been an accredited biodynamic grove since 1997. Biodynamic farming is a system about creating healthy soils without the use of chemicals or fertiliser. This produces better flavoured fruit, higher in antioxidants, minerals and micronutrients. We are totally opposed to genetic modification and nanotechnology. For further information on biodynamic agriculture see the BDRI website http://www.demeter.org.au/.

Sustainability.

We are proactive environmentally and follow a sustainable management program on our farm. We think about climate change as we are experiencing the effects in western Victoria. Our farm is not connected to the electricity grid, we are entirely solar and wind powered. Our heating and cooking is fired with olive prunings, we re-use the wood ash in our soap-making to limit the use of stronger chemicals in our soap-making. We do not irrigate, the olive harvest fluctuates with annual climate variations. The health and productivity of our farm is assured by not using chemicals or irrigation which subsequently leaches the soil of its natural vitality.

Our relationship to the natural environment.

We are custodians of a 6000 tree olive grove which was established in 1948. It is adjacent to the Grampians National Park, at the southern end of the Great Dividing Range. We also harvest thryptomene bloom from the regenerating indigenous plant life as a key ingredient in our products. Kangaroos and emus visit our grove from time to time. Our unique swing-up boundary fences adjoining the National Park allow us to periodically herd them back to the bush environment so they can rejoin the mob.

Jane_NeilRich_2010_005rsBenefits of olive extracts.

The medicinal properties of olive oil have been recognised for centuries. Olive oil in the diet is believed to reduce the incidence of heart disease, and when applied to the skin is believed to reduce the incidence of some cancers due to the high antioxidant content. See http://www.mountzeroolives.com/.
Olive leaf extract is made by steeping leaves in rainwater. This process captures nourishing elements from leaves in addition to those found in the olive oil alone. Antioxidants and other nutritional factors in olive extracts enable our cosmetics to have nourishing effects on the skin.
